00, BEFORE THE ARC
The Cabin
Someone left the light on
Where the tools get made.
A small cabin on the lake's south shore, one window lit. Inside, agents are at work on a little computer under the desk lamp. Lilly, a stray the family looks after, keeps the porch.
Status: The light is on
The room
The cabin is numbered 00 because it comes before the arc. Release, Clarify and Refine all start here: it’s the place where the tools get made.
Inside, it’s warm wood, a rag rug and one big window over the lake. A desk faces the north wall, with two Mac minis stacked under a monitor and a second screen turned on its side. Olivia, a gray tabby, sleeps on a cushion beside the keyboard. String lights run along the beam above it.
To the left there’s a tall bookshelf of our essays, and the guitar hangs on the wall beside it. On the shelf at eye level, past the essays, sits a camera: a small mirrorless body with a standard zoom, its strap coiled beside it. Photography is one of the founder’s hobbies, and golden hour is when it comes off the shelf. In the world you can take it outside and walk the valley on foot, framing your own pictures; they stay on your device unless you choose to save or share them. Under the window, a record player sits on a low cabinet, and Oliver, a black cat, watches the water from the sill. Through the window, across the lake, you can see every place on the arc.
Outside, Lilly keeps the porch by her bowl: a stray the family looks after, who lives outdoors. She’s a torbie, with an apricot blaze between her ears and pale green eyes, and she watches the lane.
You don’t walk around in the world’s cabin. You sit, and look: at the desk, the shelf and the window.

Things you might notice
Open, if you’d rather not find them yourself
Inside the cabin. A desk with two Mac minis and a monitor where agents are working, and Olivia asleep beside the keyboard. A bookshelf of our essays, a guitar on the wall, a record player under a window over the lake, and Oliver on the sill. Use the arrow keys to look around, Tab to choose something, Escape to step outside.
The desk
- The monitor
- Agents at work, on a split screen. Up top, a parade of tasks in the style of Mardi Gras and a darker sprint stepping through its tiers, both illustrative. Below, from the workbench: real commit lines from a dated snapshot, not live.
- The amber row
- One row on the monitor has turned amber. NEEDS A HUMAN.
- “Agent #47 wants to open the cabin door. Approve?”
- “Thanks. It waited for you.”
- “Okay. It'll wait.”
- From the workbench
- Real commit subject lines from the studio's public tools and from this valley's own history, dated, with the ones made alongside an agent marked agent-paired.
- The Mac minis
- Two Mac minis, stacked under the monitors. The agents' machines.
- Olivia
- Olivia, a gray tabby, asleep on her cushion beside the keyboard.
- “Olivia stirs, purrs once, and goes back to sleep.”
- The voice recorder
- A small voice recorder on the desk, a nod to Ponderare.
- “That's it. You said it. (Nothing was recorded. We'd never.)”
The shelf
- The bookshelf
- Our essays, as hardback spines. Pull one out to see what it's about.
- The guitar
- A guitar on its wall hanger, by the shelf.
- “A strum, and it rings for a while.”
- “The strings shiver. (Turn sound on to hear it.)”
- The camera
- A small mirrorless camera with a standard zoom, its strap coiled beside it on the shelf. Photography is one of the founder's quiet hobbies, and golden hour is the time to take it out.
- “Out the door, onto the porch, camera in hand.”
- The light switch
- The light switch by the door.
- “Lights out. The work continues. You don't need to watch it.”
- “Lights on. Welcome back.”
The window
- The window
- The lake, and across it every place on the arc. Ponderare's rise to the west, Arti's hollow to the north, Writer's plateau to the east. The workshop looks out at what it made.
- The record player
- A record player on the cabinet under the window.
- “The needle drops. Something slow and quiet.”
- “The record turns. (Turn sound on to hear it.)”
- “The needle lifts.”
- Oliver
- Oliver, a black cat, watching the lake from the windowsill.
- “Oliver's tail flicks. He keeps watching the water.”
Around the cabin
- Lilly
- Lilly, a stray the family looks after, who lives outdoors. A torbie with an apricot blaze and green eyes, she keeps the porch by her bowl, ears up, watching the lane.
- The mailbox
- A mailbox on a post where the lane leaves the trail, beside a hand-painted board, No. 00, that shows up in your headlights. Its flag is up when an essay came out in the last two weeks. It reads the calendar, not you.
- “The mailbox flag is up. Inside, a letter: the essay’s title.”
- The doormat
- On the way out, from inside, it says GO LIVE YOUR LIFE.
On the way out, the doormat says: GO LIVE YOUR LIFE
